Understanding heat warnings

The Cyprus Department of Meteorology issues yellow, orange and red warnings during extreme heat. The higher the level, the more dangerous the heat, especially for older people, children and anyone who is ill. CyWarn shows you the warnings for your district.

How to protect yourself

  • Drink water regularly, even if you are not thirsty
  • Stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day and postpone physical work outdoors
  • Wear light, loose clothing, a hat and sunscreen
  • Keep rooms dark during the day and air them at night
  • Never leave children or animals in a parked car

Look out for others

  • Call or visit older neighbours, people who are ill and families with small children
  • Make sure pets have water and shade

Recognise the warning signs

  • Heat exhaustion: heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, headache. Move somewhere cool, drink water and loosen clothing
  • Heatstroke: hot skin, confusion or loss of consciousness. Call 112 immediately and cool the person until help arrives

How CyWarn helps

CyWarn shows heat warnings for your district and, if you want, sends you a push notification from the warning level you choose.
