Wildfire Monitoring in Cyprus
Cyprus faces significant wildfire risk, especially during the hot, dry summer months from June to September. Forest and brush fires can spread rapidly in windy conditions.
CyWarn uses NASA satellite data to detect active fires and provides alerts when wildfires are detected near populated areas in Cyprus.
How We Detect Wildfires
We use three independent satellite sources:
NASA FIRMS
NASA's satellite system detects heat signatures from active fires, providing near real-time fire detection with global coverage
EUMETSAT LSA SAF
Fire detections from geostationary weather satellites, updated several times an hour
EFFIS (Copernicus)
European Forest Fire Information System of the Copernicus programme
Wildfire Alert Types
Active Fire
Confirmed wildfire detected - follow evacuation orders if issued
High Fire Risk
Conditions favorable for fire spread - exercise extreme caution
Wildfire Safety Tips
- If told to evacuate, leave immediately - don't wait
- Follow instructions from Cyprus Civil Defense and Fire Service
- If caught in smoke, stay low and cover your nose and mouth
- Bring pets with you and don't leave them behind
- Keep important documents ready to grab quickly
- Know multiple evacuation routes from your area
Fire Season in Cyprus
The highest risk period is June through September when temperatures are highest and vegetation is driest. During this time, outdoor fires and barbecues may be restricted. Always check local regulations and avoid activities that could start fires.
