Earthquake Safety Guide

Essential information to protect yourself and your family during earthquakes in Cyprus

Before an Earthquake

Prepare an Emergency Kit

Keep these supplies ready and easily accessible:

  • Water - 3 liters per person per day for at least 3 days
  • Non-perishable food for at least 3 days
  • First aid kit with essential medications
  • Flashlight with extra batteries
  • Battery-powered or hand-crank radio
  • Copies of important documents in waterproof container

Create a Family Plan

Discuss and practice what to do during an earthquake. Identify safe spots in each room, establish meeting points, and ensure all family members know emergency contact numbers.

Secure Your Home

Anchor heavy furniture to walls, secure water heaters, and store heavy items on lower shelves. Know how to shut off gas, water, and electricity.

During an Earthquake

Drop, Cover, and Hold On

1. DROP

Get down on your hands and knees to prevent falling

2. COVER

Get under a sturdy desk or table, protect your head and neck

3. HOLD ON

Hold on to your shelter and be ready to move with it

If Indoors

  • Stay inside - don't run outside during shaking
  • Stay away from windows, mirrors, and heavy objects
  • Doorways are NOT safer than under furniture

If Outdoors

  • Move to an open area away from buildings
  • Stay away from walls, power lines, and trees
  • If driving, pull over safely, avoid bridges and overpasses

After an Earthquake

Expect aftershocks - drop, cover, and hold on each time
Check yourself and others for injuries, provide first aid
Check your building for structural damage before re-entering
If you smell gas, leave immediately and call emergency services
Don't use tap water until authorities confirm it's safe
Use text messages instead of calls to keep lines clear
Listen to official sources for updates and instructions
